August 26, 2025Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Hon Siromi Turaga welcomed discussions with WIPO Director General for Strategic Discussions on Fiji’s IP Future.
The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice was hosted by the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for a high-level meeting on the future of intellectual property (IP) in Fiji. This visit follows an earlier engagement in March 2023 and marks further steps in strengthening Fiji’s partnership with WIPO.
The discussions highlighted Fiji’s progress since 2023, including:
• Accession to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, which entered into force in January 2024;
• Hosting of the Pacific Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Conference (HIPOC) in Suva;
• Implementation of a series of capacity-building and training programmes for the Fiji Intellectual Property Office (FIPO), delivered with WIPO support.
The meeting focused on discussions on operationalising Fiji’s new Trade Marks, Patents and Designs Acts, enhancing protection of traditional products and cultural expressions through geographical indications, and expanding access to digital IP services for innovators, entrepreneurs, and communities across Fiji.
The Acting Attorney-General reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to building a modern, internationally-aligned intellectual property system that safeguards Fijian creativity and heritage while driving national development and innovation.
